Three extremely powerful quakes rocked southeastern Turkey early this morning. According to Turkish President Recep Erdogan, the two quakes have killed more than 1,000 people with many more injured levelling buildings across several cities and causing damage in neighbouring Syria.
The US agency said that the mag 7.8 quake struck at 04:17 am local time (0117 GMT) at a depth of about 17.9 kilometres (11 miles), with a 6.7-magnitude aftershock striking 15 minutes later and the magnitude 7.5 later this morning.
