A magnitude 6.1 - Sarangani, Philippines followed by a magnitude 6.0 - Gongdanglegi Kulon, rocks the Ring of Fire! At this stage of the year, 2021 has recorded the 3rd highest total (55) of major quakes ever behind 2011 and 1957

While an explosion shot an ash column more than 33,000 feet (seven kilometres) into the sky, with lightning crackling through the towering cloud of smoke on the Caribbean island of St Vincent we have had seismic activity too. Two major quakes, mag 6 or higher have rattled Indonesia and the Philippines this morning. A magnitude 6.1 - 168 km SSW of Sarangani, Philippines followed a magnitude 6.0 - 44 km SSW of Gongdanglegi Kulon, Indonesia by just 1 1/2 hours, according to USGS.

Todays two major quakes brought the total to 7 so far in the month of April and 55 for the year so far. At the same stage last year just 33 major quakes, mag 6 or higher had been recorded. In 2019 35, in 2018 also 35 and in 2017 just 21. At this stage of the year, 2021 has recorded the 3rd highest total of major quakes ever after 2011 and 1957, according to data from USGS.
