While America convulses into violent social and political upheaval and the rest of the world watches the second wave of Covid-19 has quietly and purposely begun. While America and most of the Western world spirals out of control rioting and protesting about the murder of an unarmed black man the vicious virus is hitting new levels of daily cases.
On the 28th of May, just two days after the protests began in Minneapolis the number of new Covid-19 cases suddenly spiked and seemingly unnoticed to a new daily record of more than 117,000. The next day it rose to 121,000 new cases and on the 30th of May, new cases rose to almost 130,000. On the 3rd of June, the number of new cases per day past 130,000 and on the 5th of June reached 132,000. The total of cases now stands at more than 7,000,000 worldwide with nearly half a million deaths.
On the 28th of May, just two days after the protests began in Minneapolis the total number of new cases in the US spiked to almost 23,000 after the previous day's total of 18,000, the lowest number of new cases in a single day since the 27th of March. On the 29th of May, it rose again to almost 25,000 new cases. On the 5th of May. new cases past the 25,000 mark. According to Johns Hopkins University (JHU), more than 110,000 people have died in the US from Covid-19.
While many countries around the world appear to have the virus under control the strategy of, "let's all get back to work," is actually aiding the virus to recover and regain its hold. In Iran for instance, they had their daily number of new cases down to just 800 on the 2nd of May after it had peaked at 3,200 on the 30th of March. They hit a new peak of almost 4,000 new cases in a single day on the 4th of June. Many other countries have had similar rebounds such as Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, South Africa, Sweden, Portugal, Indonesia and Argentina to name just a few.
The record number of cases in one day goes the US with 36,300 recorded on the 24th of April, closely followed by Brazil with 33,300 on the 30th of May. The record number of new daily cases globally occurred just two days ago with almost 132,000 recorded. All the data can be found here
Meanwhile, Public Health England estimates there is TRIPLE the number of new infections shown in their data which suggests only one in 10 with the virus ends up in a hospital.
