Here we go... A tsunami warning has been issued by NOAA after a very powerful, extremely shallow 8.1 quake struck the Kermadec Islands, New Zealand tonight. It's a part of the world I told you to watch for two weeks ago after a plethora of major quakes and 200 aftershocks shook the area through February. Today the area has jumped back into life, this time just east of the Australian Plate which had been so seismic recently with several major quakes, a mag 6.1 struck north of Vanuatu around the island of Sola. Later a mag 7.4 rocked the Kermadec Islands, New Zealand after a mag 7.3 shook NE of Gisborne New Zealand and the area is suffering a burst of quite large aftershocks.

Another two mag 6+ aftershocks have been reported, stay tuned...

Thursday, 18 February 2021 It's the most impressive seismic start to a new year this century! 29 major quakes so far in 2021 as a mag M 6.1, east of Fiji is the latest to rock the Australian Plate where almost 200 large aftershocks have occurred in the last seven days

The six major quakes, mag 6 or higher reported today bring the total to 7 in the first 4 days of March and the total for 2021 to 36 so far which is the highest number this century for the time of the year. According to Reuters, tsunami warning sirens sounded on Friday as thousands of New Zealanders on the North Island’s east coast evacuated to higher ground after a third earthquake.

Workers, students and residents fled in areas like Northland and the Bay of Plenty. Civil defence officials were on the ground to help people evacuate as authorities said tsunami waves could reach three metres (10 feet) above tide levels. The latest quake had a magnitude of 8.1 and struck the Kermadec Islands, northeast of New Zealand’s North Island. This came shortly after a 7.4 magnitude earthquake in the same region. Earlier, a large 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck about 900 kilometres (540 miles) away on the east of the North Island. There were no reports of damage or casualties from the quakes.
