"The Day AfterTomorrow" Is the "Gulf Stream" stalling?

By Gary Walton
The Earth Wind Map  clearly agrees with the satellite photo below, a massive colder than average area in the middle of the gulf stream, the cold area in the Atlantic could have a devastating effect for the UK and Western Europe during the winter.
The majority of Northern Hemisphere Ocean Temperatures are Above Normal.

Analysis from NOAA satellites shows that sea surface temperatures in September 2014 were well above normal. In fact, 60% of the Northern Hemisphere ocean surface was 0.5°C or more above the 1981-2010 average. See below. An unlabelled version can be downloaded here.
Then there is a huge part of the gulf stream almost as big as the US which for some reason is colder than normal and it is the part of the gulf stream the U.K. and Europe rely on to keep their ports ice free and provide a temperate winter climate.
If the gulf stream has stalled the U.K. and Europe can expect a winter of devastation!

A screen grab form the NOAA satellite clearly showing a colder than average gulf stream

The water temperature around the U.K. and Europe appear to be higher than normal but the waters are shallow and the sea is at its warmest in September but without the gulf stream supplying warm currents these waters will quickly cool in the winter months and maybe even freeze, which would be devastating for the cities who rely on shipping.
The weather almost brought the U.K. to its knees last winter when storm after storm battered Britain for four months bringing Lord Smith, chairman of the Environment Agency to say: 'Flood defences cost money.
There's no bottomless purse, and we need to make difficult but sensible choices.'
Could the Brits manage a massive freeze this winter after last years unprecedented storms?

How the gulf stream should look
The last time Gulf stream failed to deliver was  Winter 1962/63 The Year The Gulf Stream Stalled
What happened in England that winter was like something out of the film 'The Day After Tomorrow."
Half a century ago the UK was in the grip of a brutal winter.
Cold weather reached the UK on 22 December 1962. Snow fell across Scotland on Christmas Eve before sweeping south. The Arctic weather didn't relent until March 1963.
Central England experienced its coldest winter since 1740. Rivers, lakes, and even in places the sea, froze over.

The conditions made for surreal scenes - people skating in front of Buckingham Palace, a man cycling on the Thames near Windsor Bridge, a milkman doing his deliveries on skis. For 62 consecutive days, snow lay on the ground in the south of England. The next highest number of snow lying days since then is a mere 10 in 1987.
On 31 December 1962 the Times reported: "Roads were impassable at hundreds of points, many towns and villages were cut off, railways were out of action at many places or struggling against long delays on other sections, and the airports were unable till late in the day to offer landing or take-off."
But the country was not crippled. Snow ploughs were deployed and the trains - mostly steam engines - got through.
Vegetable prices shot up by as much as 30% as crops froze in the ground. But society continued to function despite the fact that average temperatures remained below freezing for two months.
"January that year was the coldest month since 1814. There was snow everywhere and strong winds from the north and east. It was unremittingly cold. "Most of England and Wales had a blanket of snow right through the month." In February 1963 a huge snowstorm struck Northern Ireland, south west England and Wales. That led to a fall of nearly 5ft (1.5m) in Tredegar in Monmouthshire - an "outstanding amount of snow", Mr Davenport said.

Google Atlantic multidecadal oscillation and learn something before believing what this pathetic article has to say. What a joke this page is

The Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) is a mode of variability occurring in the North Atlantic Ocean that has its principal expression in the sea surface temperature (SST) field. While there is some support for this mode in models and in historical observations, controversy exists with regard to its amplitude, and in particular, the attribution of sea surface temperature change to natural or anthropogenic causes, especially in tropical Atlantic areas important for hurricane development

Thank you

Thanks for that. It's not a question of it stopping, though, but rather the energy dissipating - spreading out sideways and getting entrained into other gyres, etc. That's all it takes to slow the rate of flow. I'm not too sure how much dissipation is possible before it reaches the UK, but that cooling visible at the moment suggests something of the sort is going on...

It's a sufficiently important question that I don't want to just assume anything. Living in a small rural town, in a high-up flat with no insulation, I'm going to have to make plans if this really does look like a severe winter...

Opinion: The subsequent hospitalization of Dr. Rick Sacra who was released as "cured" of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) by Nebraska Medical Center on 26 September 2014 has me worried. He was admitted by Worcester’s UMass Memorial Hospital on Saturday, 4 October 2014 for evaluation of a cough and low-grade fever. He was released on Monday, 6 October 2014 after a diagnosis of respiratory infection. A low-grade fever respiratory infection of often said to be viral in nature. I am worried because we know that men carry the EVD in their testicles for up to three months after they are "cured," and they can infect those with whom they have unprotected sex during that time. If Dr. Sacra has the EVD and a viral pneumonia, then the possibility of the mixing of these two viruses could produce a strain of EVD that would be airborne. Who is on First?

The Gulf Stream has STOPPED! This is the second most important event in the past 2,000 years.
On November 27, 2005, the scientific community
admitted that the Gulf Stream had lost thirty percent (30%) of its mass and velocity. The same
press release stated that the computer models were estimating that the Gulf Stream would
stop in 5 to 20 years, that is before 2025 – well within our lifetimes.
On June 12, 2010, the Gulf Stream stopped.
Here's the link to read full report.
