Large earthquakes have risen by over 450% since 1900 but thats not the whole story!

Written and analyzed by Gary Walton

2 Peter 3:3,4
Above all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires. They will say, “Where is this ‘coming’ he promised? Ever since our ancestors died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation.”
We are often told earthquakes have increased but without the actual facts, so I have done some number crunching and gone all the way back to 1900 to the present day, you might find what I have discovered interesting!
More than 2000 years ago Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives when some of his disciples asked Him, "what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?"
He answered, "There will be great earthquakes, famines and pestilences in various places, and fearful events and great signs from heaven".
Famines in 3rd world countries are so common they are hardly mentioned in the media these days,  pestilences are all too topical at the moment with Ebola gripping the world with fear, Dengue fever on the rise in Asia and Enterovirus D68 targeting the kids in the US.
ISIS amongst others are providing the fearful events and you could say the extreme weather we are witnessing and the recent blood moons are great signs from heaven.

I wondered though, earthquakes have always been around, are we seeing stronger and more frequent earthquakes?
I accessed the earthquake information web-site USGS and downloaded every quake of a magnitude 6 or greater and fed the information into a series of graphs, the results as you can see above are outstanding!
In the year 1900 our planet recorded 22 earthquakes of M6. or greater, 9 were between M6 to 6.9, 13 were between M7 to 7.9.
Exactly 100 years later in the year 2000 our planet recorded a staggering 173 earthquakes of M6. or greater, of which 158 were between M6 to 6.9 and  15 above M6.9.
I know many of you at this point will be thinking yes but the technology is better now and we probably have more monitors, well yes I would agree but for another staggering fact, only magnitude 6 to 6.9 have increased, earthquakes of magnitude 7 to 9.9 have remained incredibly stable, see below.

In the 10 year period 1900/19 our planet averaged 28.9 quakes of M6 or larger
In the following ten year period 1910/19 our planet averaged 32
1920/29 averaged 31.7
1930/39 averaged 37.8
1940/49 averaged 46.6
1950/59 averaged 45.1
1960/69 averaged 65.5
1970/79 averaged 103.1
1980/89 averaged 108.5
1990/99 averaged 149.2
2000/09 averaged 161.1
the years 2010 to 2013 are so far averaging 161.

And finally the number of earthquakes of M5-5.9 or smaller, you can see on the graph below another fascinating contradiction. Magnitude 5 to 5.9 increase much steadily since 1960, actually a small reduction in the 90's while Magnitude 4 and 3 quakes have exploded since the 70.s

1960/69-M5-5.9= 971 M3 and 4 No data
1970/79-M5-5.9=11012. M4-4.9=18188. M3-3.9=4496.
1980/89-M5-5.9=14886. M4-4.9=37458. M3-3.9=17441.
1990/99-M5-5.9=13526. M4-4.9=62062. M3-3.9=45916.
2000/09-M5-5.9=15697. M4-4.9=101715. M3-3.9=77559.

Earthquakes around the globe then are indeed increasing rapidly except, it would seem for earthquakes in the category M7-7.9 for some strange reason?

Excellent Article.

Increased earthquakes of these magnitudes could indicate a serious shift in climate not to Global Warming, but towards Global Cooling and possibly an ICE-AGE is on the horizon
See and follow the earthquake info. I think that you will find it interesting.

I will indeed,

Thank you Steve

I have it also interesting that when the Bible was written, especially the gospels like Matthew, the term for volcanism was not yet a geological term. My research took me to about the 3rd century for the term volcano as it relates today as a geological term.

That said, earthquakes are predeccessors to volcanoes and - I'm not saying certainly, but I ask, could it be Jesus reference to them occurring in divers places also relate to the recent (last decade) of worldwide volcanic activity?

Today there are is volcanic activity worldwide occurring like no other time recorded in history.

As a student of eschatology, I am a believer that when a Prophet had a vision or a dream or Like John taken away in the spirit - they describe to us what they see in figurative language.

Jesus, on the other hand was was in the physical here and now answering the disciples questions - there was no need to be figurative until he gave the parables.

The effects of multiple earthquakes triggering volcanoes around the world could lead to the physical description Jesus gives us in

Matthew 24:29 Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not shed its light, and the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken.

Multiple large volcanoes erupting would cause exactly this effect. Stars falling could easily be the lit ambers falling back to earth in the darkness until it is just dark.

Now - go back to Matthew 24:27 For just as the lightning flashes from the east and shines and is seen as far as the west, so will the coming of the Son of Man be.

Against the backdrop of all that volcanic activity and the world going dark - imagine what lightening would look like?

Imagine Christ returning in this incredible brilliance of light!

maybe volcanoes should be my next task!

Thanks for the tip G Kellie

Great article I don't think it mentioned that somewhere around 1987?? they changed the logarithmic scale to measure earthquakes, most likely in anticipation of these day.

So for example a 6 earthquake today measure in 1920 or 1960 standards might well be 7.5

THis would most llikely only strengthen your argument above

God's speed all

The word "divers" does not mean "diverse". It means "unusual". So the key to look for is earthquakes where there usually aren't any.

Would you consider summing and graphing the total energy released by all earthquakes by year, including all the small ones? Might be interesting.

That might take a couple of years!

@ anonymous

Its a good point....In Luke 21 He says There will be great earthquakes, it is generally accepted as a great increase I think it would be fair to say, the earthquakes since 1900 have occurred along the current fault lines, which is not unusual.

Interesting, you link the quakes to climate, many of quakes recently I have noticed are happening around typhoons, hurricanes and tropical storms!

Good point Steve.

The Bible talks of birth pains. As birth gets closer and closer labor pains get harder and harder . That is why the increase of the larger quakes have not increased yet. YET but they will!!

It seems to me that some of the increases in 6-6.9 quakes can be directly attributable to may low 7's being down graded to high 6's. That is very evident in the past week. In the first four months of 2016 at least 6 times and we are only half way through April. Modern instruments do account for the rest in recent decades. It is easier to sort out wave patterns and list a 7.6 into two events of say 6.8 and 6.9. That is to say many of the older 7,s measured with more modern devices would have been listed as two 6's each. Lastly, the great quakes are on the increase by decades.
